U12 Red Fixtures > 2011/12 Sun Postal Challenge cup

Sun Postal 1 - 3 Abbots Red

Sun Postal were Abbots opponents in the last 16 of the Challenge Cup. Although a division below us you couldn’t see the difference as a well organized sun Postal team matched Abbots stride for stride. Abbots endeavor, persistence and 4 great saves from Drew finally paid off as we managed to edge it in extra time.

It was an even start with Sun playing the better ‘football’ as Abbots took an unhealthily long time to get into their stride. Matt produced a surging run and a delightful chip into Andy’s path created the first clear cut chance which Andy delicately chipped into the arms of the Sun’s keeper. Maintaining the pressure Bladen saw a long range shot go wide and just as we thought we were gaining the upper hand, Sun broke through and smashed one against the bar. An athletic overhead kick from Sun narrowly missed its target. Sun were on the offensive and as things warmed up Drew made a fine one on one save and followed it up with a superb full length dive to his left to keep the Abbots goal intact.
Abbots hit back forcing a corner which somehow didn’t go in despite the close attendance of the Abbots forwards.

Half time 0 – 0

Sun shone out at the start of the half bringing Drew into action again. Although Abbots had plenty of possession there was a lack of composure and creativity. With Sun on the offensive composure was lacking as Michael produced a dodgy clearance back into our penalty area, the pressure was too great and as the Sun forward was upended in the effort to clear the ball out a penalty was awarded and duly dispatched 1 – 0 Sun

This was strangely galvinating, Michael made amends as he won the ball, produced a slide rule pass to Bradan who found Bladen who found the net with his normal aplomb

Full time 1 – 1

Abbots were in the ascendancy as the Sun’s shine faded. A beautifully delivered corner from Matt found Michael on the back stick who headed it goal bound , Joshua was on duty haranguing the keeper but was alert enough to steer the ball gleefully into the net.

Abbots cranked it up a little and a great interchange between Matt and Andy created the opportunity for Andy to surge past the attentive defence and lash the ball in left footed (at last!)

A slightly flattering 3 – 1 score line is what the record books show but mention must be made of Drew who made some excellent saves and was awarded the man of the match.
